Ways To Celebrate Thanksgiving With Your Home Care Patients

The holidays are a time when everyone should be thankful for something. So, as a health aide, what can you do to get your clients into the fall spirit? Here are some fun ways to celebrate Thanksgiving with your home care patients.

Decorate for Fall

Even a few simple decorations will help everyone feel more festive. Options may include fall floral arrangements, pumpkins, gourds, cutouts, window stickers, or a cornucopia filled with fresh fruit. And if you’re trying to create a Thanksgiving mood while also sticking to a budget, check out your local discount store. Most of these retailers offer seasonal decorations at bargain prices. In addition, some nurses and farm stands sell pumpkins at half price (or less) after Halloween.

Make a Seasonal Craft

This isn’t for everyone. However, if you and your patient are the crafty type, get creative. The activity can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Color a coloring sheet, paint pumpkins or cut out construction paper leaves and string them into a garland. Plus, when you’re done, you can use your craft as a Thanksgiving/fall decoration.

Share a Thanksgiving Treat

A full Thanksgiving dinner sounds nice, but you don’t have to be that extravagant. Treat your client to a slice of apple pie with ice cream, donuts and cider, or a left-over turkey sandwich. Or if you enjoy cooking, turn an ordinary November meal into something a bit more special with a side dish like stuffing or green bean casserole. Just be sure to consider any dietary restrictions your patient may have before you let them splurge.

Watch a Holiday Movie Together

Grab a comfortable chair and maybe some snacks. Then, sit back and enjoy some holiday entertainment. This could be a classic like It’s a Wonderful Life, a vintage TV special like A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or a live televised event like The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. (Yes. It will take place in 2020, but with a revised format because of the pandemic.)

Give Them a Card

Let your patient know you’re thankful for THEM this Thanksgiving. Write a thoughtful note on seasonal stationery. Or take some pictures and design your own creation with an online service like Shutterfly or Snapfish.
