Starting a job during the COVID-19 pandemic presents numerous challenges. And in many cases, this begins with a non-traditional onboarding process. If your new health care placement requires a remote introduction, don’t worry. Simply follow these virtual onboarding tips for healthcare professionals.
Embrace the Opportunity
Your first reaction to virtual onboarding may be, “No thank you!” Because in the end, most of us prefer in-person meetings over remote interactions. However, like it or not, the COVID-19 pandemic has made virtual communication more common than ever before. Therefore, keep an open mind. Instead of dreading your virtual onboarding experience, think of it as a challenge and a chance to try something new.
Set Up Your Technology
When your virtual onboarding session begins, you want to be ready. So, plan ahead. Hopefully, your new employer will give you a list of requirements. But if they forget, be sure to ask. Sometimes, you’ll only need a smartphone. Other times, you may need a computer with a camera and a microphone. Also, download any necessary software or apps in advance. And if you’re struggling with the process because you’re not tech-savvy or you lack state-of-the-art devices, give your new employer a call. Most companies will assist with set up and/or let your borrow equipment.
Do a Test Run
Especially if you don’t have much experience with video calls or if you aren’t familiar with a specific app or program, test the system. Call a friend or family member and see how things work. After all, on onboarding day, you want to be paying attention to the instruction not trying to figure out your camera. In addition, consider your lighting, background and sound quality. These items are easy to overlook but, done incorrectly, they can make you appear unprofessional. Even though your onboarding is virtual, it’s still important. Treat the experience the same as if you were going to your first day of work. Dress the part and find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Then, stay engaged throughout the process by remaining attentive, completing activities and contributing to conversations.
The purpose of onboarding is to prepare YOU for success. And although you may not be in the same room as your trainer or supervisor, they still want to make your transition as easy as possible. Thus, if you’re confused about anything, ask for clarification. Of course, this may be more difficult in a virtual setting. As a result, you may choose to write down any questions and follow up afterwards with either a phone call or an email.
